Arty Borders

These techniques  allow you to create a range of nice borders very easily. Start with a basic picture you want to work with:

Select the quick mask mode (Q) as show below. We want to mask out the area that will be the border, I find its easier to mark the border and then use Invert to get the selection required.

So after selecting quick mask mode, using the paint brush and a large brush mark out a border around the picture, and then click on Image -> Adjust and select invert (or Ctrl+I).  The red bit is what will be kept. You should have something like:

Now we can play with the mask selection to get some nice effects. Lets start with selecting Filter -> Pixelate and choose Colour Half tone. Perhaps increase the pixel radius size a little, I've used a radius of 10 pixels:

Now go back to normal mode (Q) or click the button.

This leaves a selection on the image, press Delete to remove the selection, followed by Ctrl+D to turn off the selection. You should have something like:

Variations to this are off course easy. Instead of doing a Colour Halftone in step 3, try some others. Good ones to use are also on the Filter -> Pixelate menu.  For example:

Colour Halftone (small radius) and Mosaic:
