Easy Beveled Button
This creates a nice simple beveled button, also
giving plenty of options to create nice variations. To Start with
create a image with a white background about 300 x 300 pixels in
size. Use the marquee tool (M) to create a circle selection on the
image the size you want your button (hold down shift to keep the
selection circular). Something like:

Choose a red foreground colour and a darker red
background colour, try other colours for different effects.
Something like:

Now select the gradient fill (G) and select the
foreground to background fill.

Then while holding down shift (to keep the fill at
45 degrees) to a fill from the top left of the circle to the bottom
right.


Select the Select menu and choose Modify ->
Contract. Reduce the select by 7 pixels. And now perform the same
fill you did in step 3 but do it from the bottom right to the top
left. Do a Ctrl+D to remove the selection and your done:


Some easy alternatives are filling the main part of
the button with just one colour:

or doing a Contract of 1 pixel in step 4, filling
with a gradient, and then doing another contract of 7 pixels and
filling with just one colour:
