Scan Lines

 

This creates the horizontal scan lines often used for different photo effects. First we need to create a image to be used as a pattern. Create a new image 4x4 pixels:

 

Zoom in considerably and then fill the top half of the 4x4 image black. Either use the line tool or the fill tool (but first draw a selection). The end result should look something like (naturally this is enlarged quite a bit):

 

Now to define a filter select the image with Ctrl+A (or Select -> All) and then click on the Edit menu and select Define Pattern.

Open the image you want to apply the effect to, in this case we're using this picture:

Create a new layer:

Select the Edit menu and then Fill. Set the fill properties to as shown. Adjust the opacity and mode to achieve different results. You don't have to have the effect on a separate layer (step 4) but doing so lets you easily adjust the opacity and original image.
