Soft fade

This puts a nice fade around a picture rather than just a harsh sharp edge. The picture we are using is below:

Click on Marquee tool and keep the mouse button pressed until a side menu pops out, select the elliptical marquee tool from this menu.

Now using the mouse drag a appropriate elliptical selection around the children in the picture. If you stuff it up just use Ctrl+D to de-select and try again. You should have something like:

From the Select menu select Feather (or Ctrl+Alt+D), and enter a feather radius of 15 pixels. Click ok. Don't worry nothing happens. Now we want to invert the selection by clicking on the Select menu again and selecting Inverse, or Ctrl+Shift+I. Adjusting the amount of the feather radius will effect how big a blur you get on the edges of the picture. 15 is quite a lot so you get a clear idea of the result.

Click on the background colour to select the colour you want the background of the picture to be. In this example I have just left it as white but you could select any colour.

Press the Delete key to remove the selection we have created, leaving behind a nice soft edge.
